Wild, Wild West

Cold Spring Tavern

Just before arriving in Santa Barbara take a detour on the 154 (San Marcos Pass) for an unforgettable meal! Built in the 1860's as a way station for travelers, Cold Spring Tavern has delighted over a century of diners. CST is just as good now as when it served stagecoach passengers. Saturday and Sunday are the days to visit. Live music is great and the outdoor grill is fired up! Entertainment usually begins around 2 p.m. and goes until 5. At 7:00 p.m. another group of musicians continues the fun. If you are lucky enough to be in Santa Barbara on a Saturday or Sunday do partake of the breakfast (served from 8 a.m-11 a.m.). Buttermilk biscuits ($5) with gravy are delicious, fluffy, and warm. Order a short stack of flapjacks ($4) served with bacon, ham, or sausage ($3) as a side and enjoy a hearty breakfast treat. Whole Wheat French Toast ($8.25) made with molassas bread and served with a side of bacon, ham, or sausage is one of our favorites! If you miss breakfast, don't worry as lunch is not far behind. The Famous Cold Spring Chili ($4.50/$6.50) is served Texas-style with plenty of cheese and onions. Cold Spring Chili Fries ($5.75) are another favorite. For adventurous diners, try the Half Pound Buffalo Burger ($12) topped with homemade mayo, lettuce, tomatoes,  pickles, and your choice of jack, cheddar, or swiss. All sandwiches are served with a side of either potato salad, green salad, soup, or fries. The BBQ Beef Sandwich ($9.50) is roasted tri-tip simmered in BBQ sauce and served on a French roll. Tri-tip is what this place is famous for and this sandwich does not disappoint! Dinner brings a slight price increase, but some top quality entrees and appetizers. To start we love the Baked Artichoke Hearts ($8) with jack cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, and garlic cream. Save room though for the flavorful Baby Back Ribs ($23) as they are meaty and tender. Cold Spring Chicken ($21.50) is another wonderful dish and is baked with almond-raisin stuffing, and covered in sherry, sour cream, and mushrooms. If wild game appeals to you, the Sauteed Medallions of Rabbit ($24) with wild mushrooms, garlic, and brandy will surely be your choice. The integrity of this stagecoach stop has been well preserved and Chef Moises Bernal guards the historic menu with his life! Cold Spring Tavern 5995 Stagecoach Road, Santa Barbara. (805) 967-0066
