"Hey Man, Want Some Beef?"

We are always on the lookout for something new and exciting and Oliver's fits the bill for both! Chef Greg Elkin's passion for food shines through in every beautiful dish he prepares.  Oliver's claims that they serve the best steaks in Hollywood and it's kind of hard to disagree with them. Located in the Grafton Hotel, right on the Sunset Strip in the former home of Boa, this super-glam eatery boasts white leather banquettes, gorgeous mirrors, and metallic accents overlooking Sunset Boulevard. Our server Danielle, was fantastic and started us off with a couple of glasses of Mer Soleil Unoaked Silver Chardonnay ($14). This is one of my favorite whites but the rest of the wine list is outstanding as well!  The bread and herb butter followed and was absolutely delicious. We started with the Crispy Calamari ($11) served with fried lemons and spicy tomato sauce. This is some of the tastiest, well-seasoned calamari I have tasted! The tomato sauce is perfectly spicy and truly complements the freshness of the calamari. Oliver's Caesar Salad ($10), a house specialty comes with crunchy pumpernickel croutons, freshly shaved parmesan, and romaine. Dressing is tangy and works well. For dinner we had the 7oz. Petit Filet Mignon ($38) with Bleu Cheese Butter Topping ($2). Steak was tender and juicy and definitely earned the title of Hollywood's best! We also had the Lamb Chops ($32) rubbed with excotic spices, and served with endive, dates, and almonds. Lamb chops were meaty, flavorful, and juicy. Mac and cheese ($10) was cleverly served in a crock with fusilli pasta and a light bechamel sauce with toasted breadcrumbs. For dessert we enjoyed the French toast-like bread pudding with chocolate whipped cream. Usually Ruth's is reserved for celebrations of some sort, but sometimes you've just got to turn a frown upside down and go enjoy a Pomegranate Martini ($7) or a Blueberry Mojito ($7) at Ruth's Happy Hour, Monday through Friday. Check your local Ruth's for times, as they vary. So three of my friends have lost pets this week; and don't lie, sometimes the loss of a pet upsets us as much or more than the loss of a human. Well I say a mean human, but everyone has their own take on this one. So, what does a good friend do? She cheers them up with an awesome Happy Hour, and hopes they get a little happier. This post is dedicated to the best lap-jumper ever, Miss Lillian Averbach, and her (human) mother (Rhonda). As all of you know, I adore Rhonda, and wanted to cheer her up, even though I was the one who actually cried over drinks. So we ordered some food to go with our drinks. Oh, did I say some food. Excuse me; let me rephrase that. We ordered half the menu. We started with the tempura onion rings accompanied by Honey Thai sauce. Yum! These are not on the bar menu but you can order them from the dining room. From the bar menu we had the Crab BLT with zucchini fries, the Steak Sandwich with fries, the Seared Ahi Tuna, and the Spruce Point Smoked Salmon. All bar items are $7 or $8 and are huge portions. The Crab BLT is served cut in three large pieces on garlic bread with aioli mayo and arugula. It's a tasty sandwich, but the zucchini fries are where it's at! The Steak Sandwich with Bernaise is juicy and tender and a bargain for the price. The Ahi Tuna was our favorite and was some of the best ahi we've had lately. If you're a smoked salmon fan, you'll adore this dish too. It was fresh, light and delicious! All happy hour items can be ordered until about 6:55 p.m. But don't worry, you can still order off the regular menu after 7. Since 1954 The Galley has been serving some of Santa Monica's great quality steaks and spirits. A historic landmark on Main Street, every part of the Galley brings back nostalgic memories of old Hollywood. As you sit in your red naughahyde booth, dining by candlelight and twinkle Christmas lights, enjoy the story of Captain Ron (Ron Schur) a former east coaster, who dreamt of being a stand up comedian. If you're lucky he might come to your table and perform live for you! Meanwhile sit yourself down, enjoy the friendly service, and order a cocktail while you peruse the menu. From the wine list we enjoy the Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay ($45) or the Merryvale Cabernet Sauvignon ($49). To start try the House Salad ($5.50) with mixed greens, tomato, cucumber and Famous Galley Dressing. Okay so the salad dressing has a back story. It seems that Captain Ron was obsessed, and I do mean obsessed with the salad dressing at The Galley. Long before he became the rightful owner, Captain Ron hounded and hounded a waitress named Millie for the secret recipe; but to no avail. Finally, after one long night, and tired of the Captain's incessant nagging, Millie told him that, "If you want the recipe that badly, then buy the restaurant!" So he did. The rest is history. The dressing is a sweet creamy garlic concoction. Petit Filet Mignon with Gorgonzola sauce ($26) is a 5oz. tender steak served with cheesy scalloped potatoes and a choice of vegetable. I like the sauteed spinach. The 18 oz. Ribeye ($31), is a well-marbled, flavorful, juicy steak. Add a side of grilled onions ($1) or sauteed mushrooms ($3) to make it even more magnificent! We order it with a loaded baked potato and steamed broccoli. Garlic Mashed potatoes are delicious too! I love looking at the twinkle lights all through dinner. They make me happy! Save room for dessert because Rita's is right across the street! The Galley 2442 Main Street, Santa Monica. Well it's about time Agoura, it's about time. Sure it was Hamburger Hamlet, then Chapter 8, and even the short-lived Sunset Room for about two minutes. But now, Prime Steakhouse, also located in Ventura has occupied this space for nearly eight months. We've eaten here a few times and both food and service is always spot on. The eatery is beautifully decorated and very upscale. Enjoy HH in the bar with an excellent wine selection and great menu, or go all out and have dinnner in the lovely dining room. Manager Jon Lane will be sure to check in with you to see how everything is going. For Yelpers, seven nights a week this is the best deal in town! Try the $35 for $25 four course meal. I don't know how they do it, but Prime serves a fantastic meal for such a low price. We started with Jumbo Lump Crab Meat stuffed into mushrooms served with garlic cream sauce and Bacon Wrapped Shrimp. Both appetizers were outstanding. For our second course we had the Steak House Wedge with iceberg lettuce, hickory bacon, tomato, red onion, and bleu cheese dressing and the French Onion soup. Both were perfect. Our main courses were Prime Rib with au jus and the Baseball Cut Top Sirloin with braised red wine, onions and bleu cheese. For sides we both had the Twice-Baked potatoeswhich needless to say, were rich and cheesy. This was the best $25 per person ever spent.
