Max and Helen’s

I told myself I would wait until the hype around Max & Helen’s died down before going.

Reader, the hype did not die.
The hype is alive.
The hype is thriving.
The hype has a gym membership.

So my friend Debbie and I bravely drove from Marina del Rey to Larchmont Village through the kind of traffic that makes you question your life choices… all for lunch. We put our name down at 12:30, walked around Larchmont for about 20 minutes pretending to be patient adults, and honestly the wait was nothing. Yelp even updated us on the waitlist like a tiny technological guardian angel.

We sat at the counter because if you’re at a diner and don’t sit at the counter… what are you even doing?

Then our server Clint appeared. Clint was funny, charming, and had the exact energy of someone who could host a food travel show with Phil Rosenthal. At one point I realized I would happily return just to watch Clint narrate my lunch.

First up: coffee in the cutest Max & Helen’s mug that I immediately wanted to steal—I mean buy—but sadly they were sold out. Tragedy. Devastation. I will recover eventually.

Then the chocolate malt arrived.

Friends.
This malt was serious business.

It rivaled some of the best malts in the city and came with an extra-wide straw, which felt less like a straw and more like professional equipment. I may have let my friend try some, but I was guarding that malt like it was national treasure.

Food time.

We ordered the Dry Aged Patty Melt with caramelized onions and spicy mayo on rye, plus the famous Tuna Melt. I am a certified tuna melt enthusiast (self-appointed), and I can confirm: this one slaps.

And the Tallow Fries? Hot, salty, crispy little angels. No ketchup required. Honestly ketchup might just get in the way.

The whole place nails the old-school diner vibe. Every detail feels intentional, down to the tiny scalloped cocktail napkins under the malt like it’s a tiny fancy throne for your milkshake.

Final verdict:
We will absolutely be back.

For breakfast.
For another malt.
And possibly to see if Clint will narrate our meal again.
